Falls Street
(Known As Old Falls Street & East Falls Street Today)
Downtown Niagara Falls was once a bustling small city, as shown in this postcard of Falls Street. The town's 1965 urban renewal plan changed all that. The small restaurants, bustling theaters and mom-and-pop stores were bulldozed, replaced by a convention center, a series of ill- conceived urban planning developments, and, thanks to Robert Moses, a four-lane highway that separated the downtown from its waterfalls. Since then, the city center has languished. Today, city planners forge on in an attempt to undo the damage.

"I worked at Mr.S and enjoyed it. Got to meet so many hippies and was invited to Woodstock and turned it down. Can't believe what a mistake that was. Loved going to the Strand and Cataract. They were ornate. I think the Cataract had the velvet furniture downstairs where the bathrooms were. What a treat. Frequented "The Club" all the time, The Main so many good memories. Worked at Louie's Cafeteria but not long. Loved the United Office Bldg. My old dentist Dr. Mahood was there for a while. Enjoyed looking out his windows onto the city from way up high. Good times"

"I worked at Neisners but one of the things I remember from my younger years was going into the souvenir shops and looking at the Panorama Post Cards of the Falls. I loved them" - Carolyn Slessor
"I knew and loved Falls St during the good and the bad years. I loved the Strand & Cataract theaters and walking to them every weekend. Before even that we went to the "minstrel shows" above the Gorge Terminal" - Jim Brunn
